The latest The Leftovers season 3 trailer is here leading up to the show’s April 16 premiere, and this one’s desperate for hope.
Specifically, this one raises the question as to whether or not Kevin Garvey could be the savior for all humankind. Is he a Jesus? He’s been resurrected, and what he’s went through is in so many ways different than almost anyone else in the world. Clearly, there’s something that has transpired with him that makes you wonder what his larger purpose is in life. The implication is that he is very much special, and different from the remainder of the world.
During season 3, maybe he’ll have a few prophets of his own showing him the light … including his father of all people. Despite his own history of illness and pain, maybe this is a man who knows a thing or two about his salvation. With warnings of a great flood or some other sort of global crisis, Kevin may know a way to help … he may just not know it front of mind. There’s a moment at the tail end of the trailer where we even wonder if Kevin’s father is forcing him to venture into the afterlife (or whatever the show’s version of that is) in order to figure out a solution before coming back.
This season will also feature a pilgrimage of some sort to Australia, where Kevin once again finds himself a stranger in a strange land. Every season brings its own flair, its own religious imagery, and also its own reason to feel either hopeful or hopeless. There’s so much death within the world of this show, and also so much grief. There’s never a great indication as to what the next day will bring, let alone the next minute.
Also, there are still many out to do terrible things. Look at what someone seems to be doing to Nora Durst and her children; there’s never any opportunity for her to escape the pain that’s surrounded her ever since she lost so much of who she was in the Departure.
