This Is Us episode 17: Milo Ventimiglia opens up about Jack’s drinking

Jack's drinking -

Will Jack’s drinking cause his death on This Is Us episode 17? That would be incredibly heartbreaking, but at the same time, this is absolutely something that you have to consider when it comes to this character. The reality that we’re facing here is a rather simple one: Jack is an addict, and he’s going to use that potentially to fill a void that he has, whether that be a time gone by or feeling ignored or left out of the family equation. you can argue if he is jealous of Rebecca with her band; we just think that he wants to feel important and a part of something.

The last time that we saw Jack was when he picked up the bottle after many years away, and based on what Milo Ventimiglia said to Entertainment Weekly, it looks like this is going to factor heavily into the story for the last couple of episodes this season:

“I think that’s a good indication of where we’re going … Jack has years later decided to take up a drink again. It can’t be good for many reasons, and alcohol only messes up and further clouds judgment. So you got to believe that Jack’s judgment is going to be clouded in a time that he’s already really trying to hang onto his family structure. Even though he’s looking for that escape, that escape ultimately will come back and bite him in the a–.”

There is no guarantee in here that Jack’s drinking could end up being the reason why he ends up dying, but we have to consider that a possibility. While this is a show that has introduced some twists here and there like what they did in the pilot, we also don’t think that they are trying to pass along red herrings and deliberately trick you. The direction of the story itself is meant to be realistic and organic, so when Jack picks up the bottle, there is a very clear reason why you should be worried. It’s already been confirmed that Jack dies, so the question at this point is really just how.

For the record, we’re fine if This Is Us doesn’t give us an answer in episode 17 or the finale. It shouldn’t be rushed; it should just feel real, and something that does make sense for the character.
