‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 12 review: Maggie’s mother arrives, but receives tough news
Last week, “Grey’s Anatomy‘ revealed the big news when it comes to Dr. Alex Karev: He was not going to be locked away in prison! It was not altogether hard to determine precisely what happened here: Andrew must have dropped the charged.
The biggest mystery here is why. While Andrew was pestered for answers over the course of Thursday’s episode, he was not altogether interested in spilling the beans on his reasoning. Instead, he was more than satisfied to just let the bygones be bygones and just move on. Alex did the right thing in apologizing to him for what happened, and given that Bailey decided to give him his old job back provided that he brings her the right documents, they’re going to be seeing plenty more of each other as the season progresses.
Here’s the irony – Alex was excited to get back to work with Meredith, but she found herself suspended over her attempt to protest Dr. Minnick spending time in the operating room. This was understandable on Bailey’s part, given that she hired Minnick for the purpose of turning around the hospital and she expects her to be given the time and the respect in order to do this properly. That’s not happening, and if the current patterns continue, we could see this becoming more and more of an issue.
Minnick made it clear after learning of her swift action with Meredith that she didn’t appreciate it. After all, she realized that she needs to have the attendings on her side, since otherwise it would be chaos constantly and would never improve. Bailey promoting April for the time being seemed to be the best way, at least to her, in order to keep the peace and show that it is fine to have people in opposition to her. What was rather surprising to some was learning that Minnick had a somewhat surprising ally present in Catherine Avery, who was not in lockstep with her husband every step of the way.
Maggie’s mother receives harsh news – She arrived from Hawaii in an attempt to see Jackson and get some plastic surgery to feel better about herself. Unfortunately, she left with the news that she had a form of breast cancer. This news was devastating, and she wanted Jackson to be there in order to tell her daughter. Unfortunately, Maggie had been holding onto much of her anger over her mom leaving, and what this meant was that we saw an explosion of anger at her right before she was about to deliver the news. Maggie thought she was being selfish, and she failed to understand in the process precisely what her mother was going through. Because of the fight, she still doesn’t know and Jackson was sent on his way.
This story was easily the most emotional of the episode, largely because it showed even further just how anyone in the doctor is human and can make mistakes — and we’re not just talking about at the operating table.
As a whole – This episode was just about everything that you could want — it’s probably not the most memorable one of the entire season, but it did a great job of pushing forward many of the key stories and giving us some reminders of how many of these problems are not the sort that are going to go away in an hour. This includes Owen and Amelia, who closed the hour with a tense moment as she still is not seeing him. Grade: B+.
