Jon Lovitz, Avocados from Mexico put you into a trace in their Super Bowl Commercial
Avocados from Mexico are frequently a sponsor of the Super Bowl, and with that, many of their commercials do have a tendency to be some of the stranger ones that you’re ever going to see. What they’ve come up with this time around is really no exception. It’s trippy, it’s random, and it’s going to feature none other than former “Saturday Night Live” cast member and recent “Celebrity Apprentice” cast member Jon Lovitz front and center.
Lovitz is going to be advertising avocados in one of the most psychedelic ways imaginable, while also hyping up some of the various ways in which these items can be used. This is certainly one of the stranger commercials that you’re going to see for the big game today, but hopefully also one that brings a smile to your face.
What worked – The entire commercial is about avocados, and they make it completely impossible for you to not realize what it is that you’re looking at. The video is almost trance-like, and it does draw you in and make you want to watch the whole thing just for the sake of seeing where it goes. Lovitz is a great spokesperson given that he’s immediately recognizable and has a distinct voice that you’d recognize from anywhere.
What didn’t – This is REALLY not the sort of ad you could watch more than once. It’s effective once just because it’s so strange and unexpected, but we could see this becoming a mute-button classic for anyone who has the misfortune of needing to listen to this on more than one occasion.
Overall – We don’t consider this to be one of the best ads of the day, but it’s not bad for what it is — a strange way to get people to make more guacamole. It does make you crave the product, and it also makes you want to sit down and watch it even in the middle of a very big game. It just doesn’t have any replay value at all. Grade: B-.
