Looking at ‘Supergirl’ season 2’s romantic pairings before ‘Supergirl Lives’

Mrs. Carter: What’s the state of love on “Supergirl“?

After many weeks off the air, the superhero show returns to The CW on Monday night with “Supergirl Lives,” a story that will revolve in part around the search for a young woman that ends up leading to Kara and Mon-El finding themselves trapped on a foreign world under a red sun — otherwise known as a place where they are unable to take full advantage of their powers. It’s a challenge, and it’s a test to who they are as people. Also, it may be a test for their fledgling relationship.

Whether or not the two characters should be together is a hotly-contestant debate within the world of the series already. There are some who feel like Kara’s better off on their own, just as there are some who want her with either James or Winn. We personally find ourselves a little bit more in the Winn camp, though at the same time we feel like the show focuses in part on romance for Kara a little too much as it is. We can make the same argument for most of the CW – DC Comics universe that’s out there. The Mon-El pairing is mostly interesting just because the two have a similar backstory, yet at the same time react to their circumstances differently. They are opposites that are in some ways the same.

At the end of the day, these characters are not together now despite the buzz around them. They may never be together. We don’t see Mon-El being a “will they or won’t they? pairing that lasts forever. It’s not even clear at the moment what the long-term plan for Mon-El on the show is going to be, let alone with Kara.

The state of Alex and Maggie – It’s different. They’ve only been together a super-short period of time, but there’s something domestic about the two of them. They have problems, but they’re supportive of each other’s problems. There was never that much ambiguity about whether or not they would be together, and what the characters represent is an idea that is significant important to this show and the larger comic-book world. How many stable couples are there, let alone stable LGBT couples? There aren’t exactly any. The only other relationships we really have functioning at present are Barry / Iris on “The Flash” (they’re still new in their own right) and Diggle / Lyla on “Arrow,” who’ve been together long enough that it is hard to imagine one now without the other.

We do think that Alex and Maggie can get to that Diggle / Lyla point in due time, but much of the rest of the year should still be about Alex and her ups and downs in particular. This is someone who’s barely been in relationships, let alone someone who’s only been recently aware of her sexuality. It’s hard to imagine she’ll be perfect or know what to do in every situation. Maggie should remain flawed, as well — we love the relationship, but there does need to be conflict within it. It’s not realistic to have the two walking on sunshine for the next twelve or so episodes just because they’re uplifting and inspirational.
