Mariah Carey responds to supposed lip-sync, botched ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ performance

Mariah -While last night proved itself to be a good one for a number of entertainers out there, there was clearly one person who did not have themselves the happiest of New Year’s Eves in Mariah Carey. She was one of the featured performers during “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” but in the middle of her performance of “Emotion” and “We Belong Together,” she lost her handle on much of the track around her.

As you can see in the video over here, at one point Mariah chose to more or less stand on stage trying to explain away what was going on while the dancers moved about the stage without her. What seemed to happen was that there was an issue either with one of the backing tracks, or with Carey’s ability to hear it. You can argue that maybe she was attempting to lip-sync her whole way through, but it’s probably more complicated than that. She may have been wanting to sing, even if that backing track was meant to be so loud that it would be hard to hear her.

Anyway, we’ll at least give Carey some credit after the fact for not being too negative or dwelling on this for very long. In a post on Twitter after the fact, the singer seemed to shrug it off, wishing everyone a happy start to 2017:

“S–t happens ? Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!? Here’s to making more headlines in 2017”

If nothing else, maybe you can argue that Carey’s performance is the perfect way to close off what was a chaotic and at times depressing year: You think that everything is going to happen one way, only to later see things completely turn and go in the opposite direction. It was the year of unexpected surprises, with many of them being tragedies just as losing a number of beloved people. Here’s to hoping for something a little bit happier, and for Mariah to have herself some vocal redemption somewhere. It probably just won’t be this show.
