‘The Walking Dead’ alum Michael Rooker explains his own series finale idea

twdHow “The Walking Dead” will end, whenever it does come to that point, is a subject that is certainly ripe for conversation. It’s also not something that anyone has that much of a clear answer to. This is not a show that is really constructed much on the basis of hope, and the only time that we ever thought that there was potentially an ending in sight for some of these people was when Eugene lied about there being a cure for the zombie apocalypse in Washington.

While the ratings are down so far through season 7, at the same exact time they are still better than almost anything else on TV. We don’t see the show ending with season 8, or potentially even season 9. Therefore, there’s a lot of time to come up with a proper ending, though we do think that former cast member Michael Rooker has a pretty awesome one (per ComicBook.com). While at a recent appearance at Walker Stalker Con (one of the biggest conventions designed specifically for this show), the man responsible for the role of the late, great Merle offered up the following idea that is based around Chandler Riggs’ character of Carl:

“[There’s a] railroad track … going on forever, into the setting sun. From behind camera, a single individual walks down the middle of the track … You realize that individual is Carl … all grown-up, a man of his own. No one else is with him … And as he does his voice-over, you realize that all the seasons that you’ve seen is him reliving his past. So everyone on the show is dead. He’s the only survivor, and he’s on his own and walks off into the sunset, and that’s the end of the show.”

Pretty awesome, right? It’s too bad that the show will almost certainly not use it now that he’s already said his piece and that is out there in the universe. It’s hard to imagine the show wanting to duplicate anything that’s already been said. Also, Carl wasn’t privy to much of what happened around him on the show, so we cannot see the show being just his story unless he somehow becomes all-knowing.

Anyhow, we do still love some of the ideas that are out there, but we still wouldn’t be shocked if the show just ends with everybody dead.
