‘This Is Us’ episode 10 reaction: Show star on key Toby shocker

This Is Us -Tuesday night’s winter finale of “This Is Us” certainly was an installment that packed in plenty of emotion, and to go along with that, one of the big shockers that we’ve come to know as a key part of the show’s fabric. What is somewhat remarkable about what this series has done in particular, though, is that they’ve figured out a rather unique way to put these big twists into the mix without making them feel cheesy or exploitative, something that we’ve almost certainly seen at a wide array of other shows that are currently on the air.

Specifically, we’re talking here about the moment in which Toby collapsed over a coffee table after making a big, bold romantic gesture to win back Kate. Everything felt happy and bright, but unfortunately, it now looks like he may have had a heart attack and his life is now on the line.

In speaking about this particular decision, here’s what star Chris Sullivan (who plays the character) had to say to Entertainment Weekly:

“It is a bold and tricky storytelling move that only the writers’ room of This Is Us could handle. Any actor becomes concerned when the writing staff starts having them collapse over coffee tables, but I have faith in our creative team that they will tell the best version of the story that there is to tell.”

For those of you hoping for more information on Toby’s fate, there’s really not any for the time being. Sullivan won’t confirm or deny anything, which is understandable since he obviously still wants to have a job on the other side of this. What we can really hope to see more than anything else moving forward is more of the character one way or another. After all, one of the great things about “This Is Us” is that there are some other ways to bring people back, including flashbacks.
