‘Big Brother: Over the Top’ finale: The case for Jason Roy

Jason -Tonight, “Big Brother: Over the Top” is finally going to crown its winner, and we’re thrilled to be getting the answer that has drawn this season out like nobody’s business over the past few days: Who is going to win?

Yesterday, we presented the case as to why Morgan Willett should win the season, and today we’re doing the same thing for one Jason Roy! Note that we’re not doing one for Kryssie … mostly because our brain would hurt too much. (Yeah, we’ve been harsh on Kryssie, but we do actually think that she gave a pretty good speech last night given how she didn’t do nearly as much this season as she thinks that she did.)

The case for Jason – It starts with the speech, which we think was excellent in how it showcased many of his strengths. He won multiple challenges when his back was up against the wall, managed to manipulate multiple people to do his bidding, and created an atmosphere that helped to ensure that nobody on his side would ever want to go and work with the other players in the game. He’s a longtime fan of the show, and there is that sort of “support one of your fellow superfans” angle to him that neither one of the other people remaining this season have.

To us, the biggest move for Jason by far is being able to position himself so that he didn’t go home over Danielle, even when it was really in everyone’s better judgment to get rid of him there. Second to that was him winning the Veto at final five to ensure that he was evicted when the opportunity was ripe. He was very strategic, and when you’re thinking about fan support, it’s clear that he vastly overwhelms the other two finalists. He’s got the support of countless alumni, so if you trust their opinion as to who played the best game, then that’s another feather in your cap. Sure, many of them are friends with him, but as we said yesterday, we think that the advantage of Morgan having her advantage + her Double Eviction Care Package offsets the advantage of Jason being a returning player. Don’t vote based on fairness; vote based on who you would feel the best giving the money to.

The case against Jason – While he made the biggest strategic moves of the season, we’d also argue that he made some pretty big blunders that could have easily backfired in the game. First, his fake final five alliance had zero merit whatsoever, given that he never had any intention of keeping it and seemed to do it just to create further embarrassment for Alex on her way out the door. He also should have targeted Morgan over Alex the week that she went home given that she had a Care Package. Thanks to some competition wins, he was able to bail himself out of some self-induced messes.

Then, you’ve also got the question of his behavior in the game. We know that Jason fans argue to vote for “who played the best game,” but social game is a part of it. Let’s put it this way: if there was a jury this season, wouldn’t some of Jason’s comments and actions in the house come back to haunt him, and people be less likely to vote for him? Didn’t that happen to Paul last season with Natalie? Even on “Survivor” it happened with Russell Hantz. You have to make people feel good about voting for you, and while Morgan wasn’t necessarily a saint, her negative comments and actions don’t quite measure up to his.

Should you vote for him? – We figure most people have their minds made up already. (For the record, we did vote, but we’re not really about endorsements and it would probably be only out of self-indulgence if we decided to post them.) Vote for Jason if you value someone who played the game hard and attempted the most strategic moves. Vote for him if you admire his competition wins the past couple of weeks. If you’re voting against him, it’s not necessarily because you’re bitter; through some of his in-game actions, Jason did open the door for some fans to consider other options. If he loses, he’ll only have himself to blame for that.
