‘Westworld’ finale: Why is HBO keeping quiet?

Tonight, “Westworld” is airing the penultimate episode on HBO for the season, and this is a time (even before the most-recent episode airs) where we start to look ahead more towards what could be coming down the line.

Unfortunately, in this instance looking ahead is impossible. The network has decided not to release a synopsis for the season finale in advance, which means that other than the promo that is going to be coming up later in the evening, we’re going into this one blind.

As for whether or not this is an unusual move for the network to take, the short answer there is yes — but it’s also not unheard of. With many other episodes of prestige shows, releasing nothing in advance is simply a way to keep everything a surprise, and that is all the more important here when you’ve got a show so stuffed to the brim with secrets. One of the more interesting parts about this past episode is that you can argue that it opened up more questions regarding the Man in Black than it really answered. We imagine that there will be a slight course-correction on this in the finale, with an emphasis on the word “slight” given that there are so many other reveals that will likely be saved for the future. Even if the show was only recently renewed, we have to believe that there was a desire to make more episodes beyond this even all the way back in pre-production.

One thing we can say for certain is that this is a show that HBO will miss. It’s basically their #2 series now behind “Game of Thrones,” and it’s given them the best ratings they’ve had for a fall series in years.
