‘Saturday Night Live’ video: See Kristen Wiig in deleted ‘Goddesses of Creation’ sketch

SNL -There is always a sketch or two that doesn’t quite make it into a new episode of “Saturday Night Live,” and the same can be said this past weekend for the show hosted by Kristen Wiig. “Goddesses of Creation” is the name for the sketch below, and this one is particularly interesting from the vantage point of having an incredibly unique premise, but one that is also marred somewhat by almost everything that follows.

The fun of the sketch comes from Wiig, Vanessa Bayer, and Kate McKinnon playing three goddesses who are apparently in charge, along with a magic crystal who seems to be their overlord, of creating everything on earth. However, the crystal only seems interested in Wiig’s ideas, despite however weird they are.

This idea is pretty inventive, and there are moments in here that we do think that the production value is pretty strong. So what happened? Part of the issue here for us is that this feels like a pre-taped version of a live sketch, and it loses a little of the energy in the process. We also think it would’ve been funnier of Wiig’s character came up with fictional animals that were even stranger than a flamingo or a clam to make all of this even more ridiculous. Also, it’s clear that the writers had no real way to get out of the sketch, and the ending is incredibly odd and makes little sense.

In the end, we understand why this didn’t end up on the show, but we like that “SNL” thought out of the box with this. We’ll take something like this any day of the week as opposed to another edition of the Californians or something else that’s been done to death already.
