Is ‘Westworld’ still delivering a punch following season 2 renewal?

For a good while this season, one of the biggest surprises surrounding “Westworld” on HBO was the mere fact that for one reason or another, the network really wasn’t in any hurry to renew the show for more episodes. Luckily, there is no reason to worry about the show’s future anymore, given the big news that the next batch of new episodes is officially a go.

So did the news of this renewal change the decision-making of any viewers as to whether or not to check out the show live? Based on what we’re seeing at this particular moment, it doesn’t seem like it. Sunday night’s new episode held firm with a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic — not that demo ratings really matter that much given that we’re talking here about a network here that doesn’t rely on traditional advertisements in order to gauge its success.

Now, let’s transition quickly over to the total-viewer measure. This episode here generated almost 1.8 million viewers, and that is a reasonable increase of around 200,000 from the overall audience that watched it the week before. We believe that this trajectory is only going to continue now, given that there are only a couple of episodes still to come this season, and therefore only a couple of further opportunities to provide us something further when it comes to answers.

While we are absolutely of the belief that the ratings for this show will rise (it often does when you’re talking about quality), we’re cognizant of the fact that it may not happen the remainder of this season. This is a show with the potential to do something similar to “Game of Thrones,” and is build a rather robust audience during the offseason that eventually translates over to getting a good chunk of viewership when it is back on the air.
