‘Doctor Who’ 2016 Christmas Special to have theatrical release
While it may not be much of a surprise at all, it is still nice for it to be official: “Doctor Who” has some rather big plans for their upcoming Christmas Special entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” — they’re bringing the project to the big screen!
Come Tuesday, December 27 and then also December 29, the feature-length installment is going to get a theatrical release per BBC Worldwide North America and Fathom Events in select places all over the country. The screenings will begin at 7:00 p.m. in your given market.
While this sort of release doesn’t always work for television shows, the fanatical nature of “Doctor Who” makes it the perfect candidate for such things. It helps to further unify many fans that are out there, and provide them with a venue where they can watch and enjoy the adventure in a different but still exciting way. Not only that, but you also have to remember that there’s certainly a profit to be made here by the BBC; otherwise, they wouldn’t being doing this. the world of television isn’t exactly a charity.
While we are still waiting for many details about this special to be released, we do know already that “Shameless” actor Justin Chatwin is set to play some sort of superhero-like figure for the special, and it will have a rather different feel than some other stories that we’ve seen over the course of the past several years. We don’t quite know how that can be much of a surprise, given that at present, the Doctor does not have a traditional Companion by his side by any means. Pearl Mackie will eventually be coming on board as Bill, but presumably not until we get around to the new season in 2017.
