‘The X Factor’ UK: Ed Sheeran reportedly to write winner’s single
Great news for the remaining acts taking place on this season of “The X Factor” — they’re at the very least going to be put in the best possible position to succeed following their time on the show.
According to a new report coming in right now via The Sun, singer-songwriter / superstar Ed Sheeran is poised to be writing the winner’s single for this year’s competition, which is a huge coup for the show as they try to actually launch a career this year. At this point last year, the horrifying news was coming out that the winner would be releasing a cover of “Forever Young” from Bob Dylan. While the show was fantastic when it first came out, it didn’t work for either Louisa Johnson or Reggie ‘N Bollie when they performed it; Louisa ended up releasing the song, but it was a commercial flop that put her off on a pretty disappointing trajectory as she looked to kick-start her career.
Speaking per the aforementioned publication, here’s what a source had to say about getting Ed on board to help create something good for the show:
“Everything Ed does turns to gold. To have him write the winner’s song is huge and amazing news for this year’s winner. All the remaining contestants have heard the track and it works for the majority. They can’t believe potentially their first ever single will be written by Ed. The only chance his song won’t get used is if 5 After Midnight or Honey G pull off a shock win.”
As a performer, we’ve got all the respect in the world for what Ed is most-likely going to be able to accomplish on the series moving forward. Yet, at the same exact time we cannot exactly say we’re brimming with confidence without hearing the song yet, given that it’s so hard to just write a song without envisioning a clear point of view for it. That’s why we prefer at times catering the winner’s single to each individual finalist rather than the other way around. Phillip Phillips’ “Home” is a tremendous example of this from “American Idol,” and it’s arguably the most successful winner’s single from any show out there.
