‘Westworld’ season 2 may not air until 2018

Here’s the great news that was reported earlier today: “Westworld” was renewed for a second season! Now, the bad news is that you may be waiting for a rather long time in order to get the epic series back on HBO.

Speaking per The Hollywood Reporter, programming head Casey Bloys made it clear that because of all of the different production demands, it could be 2018 until the show is actually ready to air:

Westworld is such a big, ambitious show. I don’t know if it will be fall of 2017 or into ’18 … That will depend as we get up and running. With Westworld, because the production is such a big endeavor, I don’t exactly know when [it will premiere] yet. I can’t speculate other than to say it’ll either be ’17 or ’18. Probably more like ’18 and half-hours [Insecure and Divorce] in ’17 but we’re a year away so let’s see how it goes.”

If the show takes until 2018 to come on the air, we don’t have any problem at all with that for one simple reason: You want to wait for quality television. It’s one of the reasons why “Sherlock” only goes once every couple of years (that and the actors’ schedules), and “The Leftovers” had a hiatus longer than a year both of the times that it’s been off of the air. This is an expensive show with a vast world, and in the first season there was such care for the story that there was a temporary shutdown of production. Don’t sacrifice anything to ensure that you’ve got something that can be remembered long down the road.

To date, “Westworld” is averaging across multiple viewing measures more than 11 million viewers.
