‘The X Factor’ UK: About the latest Honey G – song choice controversy
Typically on Mondays, we do our part to postmortem why a given contestant was sent home the prior day on “The X Factor.” However, in this instance we do want to talk more instead about the latest controversy that is coming out of the show — which we think in part stems mostly from the fact that there are many people out there who just want there to be a controversy related to Honey G.
At the end of this past show, we saw that the theme for the next week is going to be songs from the cinema — in other words, UGH. Wasn’t the whole point of this week to feature different themes? In between this show and many others that are out there, we’ve seen this theme a million times over, and it’s a pretty terrible one in practice anyway. Just think about it this way: You can pick some song in a random soundtrack that wasn’t even featured much in a movie, and you can claim that it suits the theme.
The controversy for Honey G comes out of controversy that she knew the song she was going to perform mere minutes after the theme was announced. Of course, this was read by many as that she was 1) aware beforehand that she was going to be safe and 2) she had advance knowledge of the theme.
Here’s what we can tell you about this: People on these shows often plan well over a week in advance. Sometimes, you want to be able to ensure that your song is cleared with the powers that be, so that you don’t have to change things up at the last minute. Other times, you just want to look ahead. Our feeling is that with the game of roulette the show’s playing, there are probably several different themes they are told of in advance so that they can start thinking of ideas.
