‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Dave Chappelle’s final promo; what to expect

SNL -Tonight, a new episode of “Saturday Night Live” is coming on the air, and this one is certainly an oddity for a variety of different reasons. First things first, you’ve got Dave Chappelle hosting the show for the first time ever. It’s one of those things that you would’ve hoped to see happen back during the “Chappelle’s Show” days, but it never did. Also, you get iconic group A Tribe Called Quest performing. This show’s got all the makings of being wonderful.

Now that we’ve said that, let’s move on to another oddity: This is the first show we can think of in a long time (feel free to correct us if we’re wrong) where the host did not do a promo featuring another cast member. In the one below — which contains an all-familiar joke about Dave “showing up” to host the show — you only see him with the musical guest.

Why do this? Our guess is that it does further aid Chappelle’s reputation as being somewhat enigmatic, and it gives you something more to look forward to. Other than that, though, your guess is really as good as ours given that we don’t completely understand the logic of not getting all of the comedy you possibly want out of these. Wouldn’t people have paid attention if Dave did one of these with Leslie Jones or the vastly-underutilized (at least so far this season) Bobby Moynihan, who is consistently excellent anytime you use him?

We do still think that Chappelle will get some laughs tonight, but we have absolutely no clue what to expect or what he’s going to want to do. We’d be surprised if he reprises any of his old characters, mostly because we’re not sure who owns the rights to all of them.
