‘Luther’ season 5 may happen in some form, claims Idris Elba

Luther

For everyone out there who has been feverishly hoping to see a “Luther” season 5 at some point in the future, we come bearing some rather-great news: The red tie could be back at some point in the future!

While answering some questions from fans on Twitter, series star Idris Elba made it clear that there is a “big chance” that there could be another series of the show coming at some point moving forward. This news comes many months after the fourth season, a brief affair, aired on BBC One in the UK and BBC America as a consolidated special.

We always wonder with every season of the series if we are nearing the end of the road, and yet, something happens to bring Elba back as John Luther — which certainly makes us pleased. This is in our mind the actor’s signature role, and we say that knowing he has done some other fantastic stuff. He just brings so much to it, and this character is one of the best created over the past several decades on British television.

While we’d personally be thrilled with any “Luther,” even a big-screen version, our dream would be to have him back for something akin to a four-part series where we could see him stick around for at least a little longer than in recent years. Or, go the “Sherlock” model and make three 90-minute episodes ever 2-3 years. Either way, we’d love this to be a traditional that lasts for many years to come, provided that this is something Idris is interested in doing.
