‘Supernatural’ season 12: Spin-off still possible at some point

Take a look -

There are two questions pertaining to “Supernatural” that tend to come up every single time the show appears at the TCA Summer Press Tour. The first one is whether or not we’re entering the last season, and the second one revolves around the idea of a spin-off.

Yesterday, we answered the first question with a standard answer: So long as the ratings remain fairly solid, we think that the show will last as long as Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles want it to. As for a response to the second question, the simple answer we can offer is that there are still some plans for it to happen … eventually.

Speaking at TCA, CW programming head Mark Pedowitz said that he is leaving it up to studio Warner Bros. TV to come up with a new idea, and when they do the network will look at developing it. He’d like to see some sort of spin-off happen at some point down the line.

If one is made, it would not be the first time that the network will have flirted with the concept of a spin-off. This happened previously back several years ago with “Supernatural: Bloodlines,” an ambitious concept that moved the world to a more urban setting and had more of an ensemble cast. However, it failed to resonate with viewers or the network with its backdoor pilot, and was not picked up for a full season.

Would we be down for a spin-off? Sure, but it is especially hard with this show given that so much of its success is tied to the brilliance of Jared and Jensen as their characters. You have to find other actors who can figure out the tone of the show just right, and bring that right combination of drama and humor in the process.
