‘Wayward Pines’ season 2, episode 8 review: It all gets weird

Pines

Is weird good? That’s something that you probably should be asking yourself after watching “Wayward Pines” Wednesday night. There were some interesting moments in here, but did anything really happen that furthers the main story in a compelling way?

Well, we suppose the big “reveal” is that Rebecca is pregnant with Xander’s child, which furthers along that love triangle in a way perfectly suited for some sort of soap opera. This show is better than that on so many levels, or at least it was back during season 1. Season 2’s had some moments, but this may be a lowpoint, coupled with the extended amount of time we spent during this episode watching people run around after Margaret.

Also, Hassler decided to let the recent escapee make it back to her people, and in the process, seemed to decide that he would rather join them as opposed to beating them. Was this surprising? Sure, but consider the circumstances here: Many of the residents of the town are proving themselves to be dunderheads, and you’ve also got Jason leading the charge. How much good has he really done over time?

We’re set up better now for some crazy, catastrophic decisions in Wayward Pines now that there is more clarity as to how screwed everyone is, and how bad an Abbie attack could hit them now that they are so motivated. The shooting in the woods was brutal and seeing more Abbie hierarchy was interesting, but even with this being a ten-episode season, it still felt like much of tonight’s episode we could’ve done without.
