‘Call the Midwife’ season 6: Could it be show’s last, or is future still bright?
Today marks the first Sunday in quite a long time in which there is not a new episode of “Call the Midwife” airing on the BBC, but let’s make it more than abundantly clear that there is still quite a bit to be excited about for the future.
For one, the ratings are as strong as ever! The numbers for the season 5 finale easily surpassed those for the season before, and if there was ever a good sign for the future of the show, this would be it. Meanwhile the sixth season was ordered before season 5 even started to air, which is a tremendous sign of confidence from the BBC that they know they’ve got a hit show and don’t want to do anything to make people wonder about the future.
Recently, star Stephan McGann made it clear to the Radio Times that he could be on the show for a rather long time still to come:
“I can easily see Call the Midwife in space … I will be Doctor Turner, 145 years old, still dashingly handsome with amazing pills to preserve me!”
Personally, we feel like we are probably at least past the halfway point of the series, given that primetime dramas really only have so long that they can last. With that being said, we could easily see a season 7 or a season 8 of the show in the future. It has been a little bit of a slow burn, and thanks to that lack of over-exposure we feel like people have time to miss it when it is not around, and look forward to it when it is back.

Call The Midwife is very well positioned and established as a Sunday night drama on the BBC, very much like Heartbeat was on ITV for the best part of 18 years (running longer that the 1960s time period it was set). I’m not sure whether the series can or even would wish to sustain that length but I could say that series 10 or even 12 could be a possibility if it can maintain the quality of the writing and performance, maintiain the interest of the audience, and have stories they wish to tell.
