‘The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story’ episode 6: Sarah Paulson on Marcia Clark – Darden relationship

Marcia -

Tuesday night’s new episode of “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story” happened to be one of the best in the entire series, and to go along with that it also marked a particularly wonderful performance from Sarah Paulson. We had Marcia Clark exposed to us as a person in a way that we had not really seen to date. It was real, raw, and it was certainly emotional a million times over to see the press try to mangle her reputation just because of her attachment to a particular case.

If there was one person who was still at her side, though, it was fellow prosecutor Christopher Darden (Sterling K. Brown), who shared an especially tender moment with her in the end of the episode. Were we meant to interpret that as something romantic? In speaking to TV Guide, Paulson explains how a “spark,” as suggested in a question about their relationship, may be the ideal way to describe it:

“Sterling and I both had our own personal opinions about what we think was going on between them. I like the word ‘spark’ because I don’t know if it was anything more than that. This is that kind of thing where neither Marcia nor Chris has ever come out and said that anything happened between them, so we certainly were not going to make a big statement that something had if we didn’t know that to be an actual fact. But, I certainly think they were two people who were incredibly close during that trial, because they were in the trenches together and were there for each other. They were the only people in that place in time, in that space in time, that could possibly understand what it was like. And that was incredibly bonding. I think they had an enormous amount of respect for one another, and they spent a lot of time together. So, spark is probably an appropriate word.”

The good thing is that we know Clark is still getting to do great things in real life, even if she had to undergo this great personal hardship. Knowing how the case ends certainly throws another wrench into it.
