Spin-Off Goals: Should ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 lead to more for Owen, Amelia?

Grey's AnatomyGrey’s Anatomy” is such an interesting test case of a show that can go in almost any different depending on what Shonda Rhimes wants to do. It’s a series that launched a spin-off in “Private Practice” in the early going, and that show ended up lasting for many years. Eventually, though, it ended, and that show ended up leading to Caterina Scorsone jumping over to the flagship as Amelia, where she is now a regular.

Given that “Private Practice” was such a success, why not do it again … and with Amelia front and center once more? This is what we want to touch on today in the latest edition of our Spin-Off Goals article series.

Why Owen and Amelia? – The simplest answer to that is that these two characters have a lot to gain from being a part of a new show. They’ve both been through some pretty terrible / shocking circumstances over the course of their lives, and when you think about it, they are people who could certainly use a fresh start somewhere else without all of the dark clouds … both literally and metaphorically.

The idea – It’s really not too difficult to think about here. Why not just move the two of them to a new city, where they can explore a different sort of practice with some other people? They could help to either lead a new team of doctors or work a little it more independently. The truth here is that with Rhimes on board, it really doesn’t matter where you put them since she knows and understands characters better than almost anyone else on TV.

Will it happen? – Not anytime soon, since we’re not sure the story of Owen and Riggs has hit anywhere near its peak, and Amelia still has things to work out with Meredith. Now that we’ve said this, we do think that one of the good things about such an idea is that you could always bring Ellen Pompeo and Martin Henderson over as guest stars if you wanted to continue that story. Maybe this could happen if for whatever reason “Grey’s” comes to a close.
