‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 4 spoilers: Are hard times ahead for Dr. Turner?

Call the Midwife -

There is a new episode of “Call the Midwife” coming on the BBC in a very brief amount of time, so is there a better opportunity than the present to set up what could be one of the few serialized stories the show is giving us this season?

For the most part, the stories that tend to go from one part of the season to the next tend to be more character-based; however, the Thalidomide scandal is one that started at the end of last season, and is going to continue moving forward this year. A lot of this stems from what is, quite frankly, ignorance of the times. No one necessarily knew what the long-term effects of many innovations were going to be at the time, and that is something that many doctors had to learn the hard way moving forward … including Dr. Turner, who is set to experience some devastation over the course of the next several weeks.

In further previewing what is sure to be a super-emotional story in a new interview with the Radio Times, actor Stephen McGann had the following to say:

“He always wanted to push the progress Britain was making for women, and that essentially is going to blow up horribly in his face. It is tough … The shock, the appalling sense of responsibility for those people in our care… I think doctors took a sort of collective guilt as a profession.”

In other words, just keep your handkerchiefs out. You’re going to need them a lot.
