‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Could Peter Capaldi leave with Steven Moffat?

Doctor WhoHere is the thing regarding Peter Capaldi and his long-term future at “Doctor Who“: There were already rumors regarding his exit from the show next season even before showrunner Steven Moffat announced his decision to leave. Now that this is official, it is appearing as though this talk is accelerating.

Speaking per the Mirror in a new interview, a BBC source claims that with Chris Chibnall stepping into the role of showrunner, there could be an opportunity for the show to start over with a new star and a creative team on board:

“Bosses are already discussing a fresh start when Steven leaves. They’ve been happy with what Peter has brought to the role but some think it might make sense to give Chris his own choice of actor to play the Doctor … They hope he will be able to find someone who can have the same impact as Matt Smith did when Steven Moffat kicked off his run as executive producer.”

Ultimately, our feeling is that Capaldi may want to leave after season 10 just because three seasons is a long reign for a Doctor, and it could be time for him to move on to other things. We’re not opposed to having a new lead and showrunner at the same time, with the one caveat to this being the simple fact that we want to see at least one holdover somewhere, whether it be the Companion or some members of the writing staff. It’s good to have an opportunity somewhere to carry over the culture that has already been established.

“Doctor Who,” per recent reports, will not air season 10 until 2017; however, there will still be a Christmas Special to look forward to at the end of the year. If you want to get some more TV scoop sent right over to you, sign up here for our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: BBC.)
