‘Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen’ episode 5: Grayson Schmitz, Angelina Bastidas, Wesley True’s burger battle

Take a look -

On the latest episode of “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen,” we had what may truly be a redemption story. Also, it’s maybe also further proof that being a judge of a culinary competition is very nuanced, and some of it may be objective.

We had a three-way battle this time around between Grayson Schmitz, Wesley True, and Angelina Bastidas during this episode (watch below), where their task was to cook a burger that far and away surpassed the rest. All three of them, per head judge Tom Colicchio, did a really great job. Grayson used beef and pork belly, Angelina went with a pork / beef hybrid, and Wesley tried using lamb once again after he lost the competition overcooking it … only to then slightly overcook it again here. It wasn’t bad by any means, though.

Admittedly, we’re watching this with a slight Grayson bias because we find her to be ridiculously great entertaining, so we were somewhat surprised to see Angelina win! This is where it comes down to personal taste: We personally like our burgers cooked a little bit more than hers was, but at the same time this is what Tom apparently wanted so he could get all of the flavor. The last thing we’ll do is take that victory away from her, given that she’s really the biggest underdog in the whole competition given that she is up against many restaurant owners and executive chefs this season. If she can make it all the way back into the competition, it would be a real redemption story.

One thing we did really like to see from Angelina in here? Just how she relaxed she was throughout.
