TV Underdogs: Will ‘Suits’ season 5 show Donna Paulsen more love?
Our new TV Underdogs series at CarterMatt is meant to recognize characters who are fantastic, and therefore deserving of a little bit more love. It’s interesting to include Donna Paulsen of “Suits” onto the list, mostly because she already receives plenty of attention on the show. Heck, the entire cliffhanger leading into season 5 was about her deciding to work for Louis Litt over Harvey Specter.
Yet, we still want more! Why? Well, it has something to do with the fact that Donna is amazing. She’s funny, smart, loyal, and a fan favorite for a reason. While we’ve come to know her rather well through the years, it feels like there is plenty still we could learn about her.
Why she’s an underdog – You always want to root for people who put power-players in their place, and Donna is certainly one of them. She proves just how valuable the right person is for changing someone’s entire career; she’s made Harvey much better at his job, and she’s now attempting to do the same with Litt. She’s got a stellar memory, a commendable work ethic, and she’s someone who still enjoys some of the finer things in life. (The storyline with her, Louis, and the theater is a person favorite.) She also never asks for too much in return.
Why we don’t see more of her – There’s really still so much we don’t know about her, primarily since we rarely tap into her point of view on subjects and we also don’t see a whole lot of her personal life. That may be because she’s really good at separating that from work. Either way, we feel like there is much more we could learn about her that informs her decisions, including why she has some of the attributes that she does at her job and also why she maintained her working relationship with Harvey for so long.
Ways to give her more airtime – One obvious way is to finally put her and Harvey in a romantic relationship, but we don’t get a clear sense this is coming in the immediate future given everything that he’s been trying to work through. Instead, how about giving us more scenes where we see the firm through her lens? It’d be interesting to see how someone like she reacts to Mike Ross’ arrest, given that she has long prided herself on knowing almost everything about everyone. It’s possible and likely she never saw this coming.
