‘Fargo’ season 3: Could characters from prior seasons return?

Fargo season 2One of the interesting things about “Fargo” on FX is that this is not a show particularly beholden to airing in a single time period, or the city of Fargo itself. While there are some similarities in tone and style between seasons, creator Noah Hawley has enough flexibility to allow things to be mixed up here and there.

With this in mind, the show is going to be jumping forward close to thirty years for the upcoming third season. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hawley made it clear that season 1 would be set around two years after the show’s first season, with the reason for that being the “based on a true story” format that they have going. If the region was to get hit up by another brutal crime right away after everything that happened with Lester Nygard, it would probably not make a whole lot of sense.

Hawley said that for the third season we could “potentially” see some familiar characters again, but he was noncommittal about anyone in particular, adding that Molly in particular had a very satisfying journey in season 1. Maybe that’s not to be touched.

Even though season 3 is moving so far into the future, he also made it clear that there could be some hints about what is coming in the second season airing now:

“There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody. There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.”
