Crossover November: Should ‘The Flash’ season 2, ‘Arrow,’ ‘Supergirl’ join forces soon?
We know that there are some out there who feel already like a crossover between “Supergirl” and the DC universe on The CW is inevitable. After all, “Arrow” and “The Flash” are established hits, and while they are on different networks than the Melissa Benoist series, they’re all produced by the same studio. They also share producers in Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, who have not ruled this out as a possibility.
So while we know that a crossover could happen, the real question is should it? For the latest edition of our Crossover November series, we’re going to take a closer look at this from all angles.
The case for a crossover – First and foremost, fun. The “Arrow” – “Flash” crossover last season was for the most part a hoot, and we really enjoyed seeing Constantine on “Arrow.” Kreisberg and company have found a way to forge organic connections between the shows, and they are looked at mostly as fan service with enough of a story to make it work. Supergirl could be a fun addition to this universe, and we can already envision a fun scene between Kara Zor-El and Cisco Ramon.
Commercially, the move also makes sense. If you want to shore up the ratings for “Supergirl,” bringing in a show that has a huge following, even on a smaller network, seems like a smart move. We still think it’s possible the show heads to The CW if the ratings do take a tumble, and that makes such a collaboration even likelier.
The case against a crossover – The biggest case you can make here is simple a matter of powers. Given the billion or so things Supergirl can do, wouldn’t she just obliterate any threat from either one of the other shows? We’ve always found the lopsided nature of Supergirl / Superman’s powers to be a little troublesome. Apart from that, there could be budgetary issues (“Supergirl” is more expensive), and CBS may want to keep the show their own for a while rather than bringing in characters from a show not all of their viewers may want to watch.
There are probably some against the idea of a crossover indefinitely, but there are probably also some simply opposed to the idea right now. After all, this is not a show that spun off like “The Flash” did from “Arrow.” It may want to find its voice and place in the universe before adding other heroes and villains.

Supergirl isn’t more powerful than the Flash or many of his villains. Can you imagine what Mark Mardon could do to her? Barry can counteract him, as he can whip up enough kinetic energy to block a tidal wave, but that kind of power is currently beyond TV Kara at the moment.

The problem is all the anti-crossover arguments generally fall flat on their face. Power levels are a concern, but exist in any universe with multiple power levels for their super heroes. Marvel always took the approach that the heroes are working non-stop so generally sort themselves out into their various power levels and origins to determine what villains they are fighting, DC just made most of their heroes far too powerful, and they’ve paid the price for it in the decades following. Budget issues vanish if CBS handle the crossover, and the CW can splash out if the occasion calls for it. Not being a spin-off certainly didn’t stop Constantine crossing over recently.
The only real issue, is the one that’s been given officially, and that’s CBS being old fashioned and not wanting to cooperate with other networks.

And I think that will probably be the issue for a little while, provided that “Supergirl” ratings don’t fall to a point where CBS thinks that it could help them.

I think we can rule out that case, the CW is so much lower ratings wise than CBS they’d probably be more inclined to axe it before the opportunity arose. There’s a few ways it could happen, encouraging CBS to do the crossover is the best way round it really, because the alternatives are doing the crossover anyway in spite of what the networks want which may cause some upset among the execs (as happened in the first attempted Arrow/Constantine crossover which never went into production) or waiting until one of the networks lose all their shows (because CBS may very well start demanding Supergirl universe spin-offs) and then dragging them on board.
