NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Emily Ann Roberts, Morgan Frazier, Shelby Brown help close Battle Rounds

VoiceFor those of you who enjoy the Battle Rounds on “The Voice,” here is the sad news: We’re now slamming the brakes on them. Given that we’ve never been much of a fan of this stage of the competition, let’s just say that we’re not feeling that bummed-out over this. The biggest thing that we feel right now is sympathy for the artists who were montaged, given the amount of time that we’ve spent over the past two weeks watching filler and fashion segments that were commercials within the show itself.

Now, let’s move on and give you a brief snapshot of some of the performances you had a chance to see Tuesday.

Shelby Brown defeats Amanda Ayala – This was tough for Amanda. We knew from the very beginning that she was going to have a particularly tough time with this, given that Shelby had a ton of air time from her audition and we knew Adam Levine was going to want to keep a country singer around to compete against Blake Shelton. Amanda did well, but Shelby did clearly win to us despite the Stevie Nicks song choice being a little out of her typical wheelhouse.

Amy Vachal defeats Jubal and Amanda – Another fairly boring battle, this time for Team Pharrell. It just feels so much more obvious that Amy has potential in this competition; we’re not even sure we would’ve seen so much of the duo in the Blind Auditions if there wasn’t that proposal there. Given that the only steal left at this point was Pharrell’s, there was almost no chance for any drama here at all, either, beyond Pharrell naming Amy the winner.

Emily Ann Roberts defeats Morgan Frazier – Of course, Pharrell stole Morgan, and he had to since the way this round is designed completely wipes away any drama on the last steal. These two are both very good young singers, and we’re not going to fault Blake for this choice. There really wasn’t that much of a difference between the two, other than that maybe Emily had even more youthful energy.

Now, the montage results: Summer Schappell, Nadjah Nicole, and Darius Scott defeated Hannah Ashbrook, Cole Criske, and Darla Jazmin. It’s so easy to hate the montage, and we wish if nothing else NBC would make these available online.
