‘Shiptober: ‘Luther’ season 4 looks at possible John and Alice romance

It’s been a while since we’ve had new episodes of “Luther”, but we know that season 4 is right around the corner (likely later this year or early next year). With this being ‘Shiptober over here at CarterMatt, we couldn’t let the whole month pass by and not talk about the strange and unusual relationship between John Luther and Alice Morgan. (Note: it has been said that Ruth Wilson will not be returning as Alice in season 4, but we like to play the “what if” game anyways).

These two started off in opposite worlds: We had Luther working as a detective and trying to get bad guys off the streets, and Alice who murdered her whole family (including the dog). Since that time we have learned that these two are not as different then we may have initially thought. Luther let a criminal drop to his death when he could’ve saved him (he did live, but was later murdered by Alice as a way of “helping” John) and while these two may not agree with each other’s methods of getting the job done, they rely on each other more and more as the series progresses.

These two have never shared a kiss, but at the same time the chemistry between them can’t be ignored. It’s sexy, smoldering and driving us crazy that they won’t just be together – but in this world is it possible for a relationship to really happen? When we last saw John and Alice they were standing on their bridge after Mary helped Alice escape. At Alice’s request, John threw his famed jacket off the bridge and let it float down the river as they walked off together. Is this the beginning of their new life together or just a better understanding of each other?

In today’s CarterMatt ‘Shiptober special we are going to look at reasons why John and Alice becoming romantic is a great idea, as well as why this could be the worst mistake of John’s life.

Why John and Alice should be together: Their chemistry is so strong, how could these two not be together? Yes she’s a criminal and he’s a detective, but deep down they have a lot of similarities.  For example, they both have no conscious when it comes to killing people that they think are really bad people, or have done terrible things to people. They both live within a world of their own laws and makes decisions based on that more so then what the actual law is. Luther has crossed over the line of what is legal for him to do as a detective and at this point we don’t know that he can really go back to law enforcement. Should he go on the run with Alice? We would love to see that happen, even if it’s only for one season.

Why John should run for his life: Alice is a murderer. Not only that, but it wasn’t random, it was her family, so what would stop her from killing John at some point? Is he going to have to sleep with one eye open if he has a life with her? Also, Alice is a fugitive, so their life together is going to have to be on the run or in hiding. This would mean that John would have to give up a lot of his freedom to be with her because if she ever gets caught, John would be likely headed to jail for harboring a fugitive. Is their connection really worth that?
