ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5 spoilers: Kerry Washington on new issues for Olivia, Fitz

The season 5 premiere of “Scandal” is coming on September 24, and you better believe that there are risks that go along with the new direction that the show is going. Of course, one of the biggest ones is going to tie into the characters of Olivia and Fitz. How do you make their new relationship work? Do they try to enjoy it in secret, or do they eventually come out and proclaim it true once some of the drama surrounding Mellie starts to die down?

Ultimately, Olivia sooner or later is going to have to realize that she can not preach to others to be forthright when she is not doing the same thing herself. This is something that Kerry Washington is very much aware of, which is why it is nice to see her uttering the following comment on the subject to Entertainment Weekly:

“I’m excited to see what happens when Olivia follows her own rules and has to practice what she preaches … From season 1, she’s always said to clients, ‘You have to tell the truth, that’s the only thing I ask of you.’ But this relationship was always an exception to the rule, which meant there was always a disconnect in what she believed and how she behaved. And so for Olivia to say, ‘I’m done hiding, I’m done lying’ … I’m excited to see what that allows her to discover in her life.”

One way or another, we do know that this new dynamic for Olivia is going to be fun, given that it does allow her to explore a different part of herself where she could have some of what she’s always wanted. With that being said, is it possible for her to actually be happy? We’re not entirely sure at this point she knows how to be.
