‘Bachelor in Paradise’ season 3: When is that renewal coming along?

BP -This weekend is the first time in over a month that ABC is not airing a new episode of “Bachelor in Paradise,” and for us at the moment, the real question now is when they are going to finally announce that more is coming.

While the series this summer got off to a relatively inauspicious start, it grew throughout most of the season and showed itself to be one of the most-lucrative summer franchises for ABC. Its ratings were relatively close to “The Bachelorette” starring Kaitlyn Bristowe, and they also found at least a decent companion in “After Paradise.” While there should be a concern there over its strength as a lead-in, we feel like that would be taken care of more if you just moved it to 10:00 p.m., “Paradise” to 9:00, and you found something else to lead off the night.

In trying to answer where the season 3 renewal is for “Paradise,” our answer is that it is probably coming in due time. There’s never really a timetable on when a network wants to renew a show, but we tend to think that for big hits, they want to make the move sooner rather than later to inspire confidence. We’re not sure we’d say that this is a “big hit,” but it is definitely a solid entry.

Also, what else would ABC really put into this spot? When you look at their other original series this summer, whether it be “Mistresses,” “The Astronaut Wives Club,” or “The Whispers,” none of them were drawing consistently over a 1.0 rating. “After Paradise” was performing just as well if not better than them, and it surely cost just a fraction of their budget.

Once there is an official renewal, we will let you know … but it’s safe to feel pretty good about it right now. The biggest challenge with getting ratings for a season 3 will just be getting together the right case, and much of that will depend on the next “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” casting pool.
