‘Scorpion’ season 2 – Walter and Paige: Will the Beauty and the Geek spark up romance this season?

We have seen this story told many times in TV land, where the nerdy boy or girl falls to the pretty/handsome popular person and eventually they get together in some kind of romantic way. This is a tried and tested story that doesn’t always work out in real life, but seems to be the norm in many TV series that has fans clamoring for more of the same (just look at Oliver and Felicity on “Arrow.) What we are starting to wonder though, is if this a storyline that is played out, or if there is a way to still breathe new life into it and give it an edge that we haven’t seen before?

Today we are putting the focus on the CBS hit show “Scorpion” as they put their own spin on the “nerd boy likes the popular girl – will they get together or won’t they” storyline. As we’ve said, we’ve seen this plot many times on TV, but there’s something special about the way the creators of “Scorpion” have gone about it during the first season of the show.

The “Scorpion” tale is based on the real life experiences of super genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and how he and his team of geniuses worked with the FBI to solve crimes. The twist comes in when a waitress at a local diner named Paige and her genius son Ralph end up joining the team so that she can help counsel and guide the geniuses as they try to fit into every day life. The spin that they have taken here is that while we have the nerdy boy pining away over the popular girl, the popular girl has a genius son and because of that, there is a deeper connection and invested interest in a brilliant mind making this romantic connection between Paige and Walter more believable.

So are we going to see Walter and Paige start a relationship in season 2? Here’s our arguments for why they should and why they shouldn’t become romantically involved this season.

Why they should: Not only do Walter and Paige have a romantic interest in each other they also have another deeper connection – Ralph. Walter understands Ralph and although he had a few stumbles in trying to mentor him in the first season, you can see how much he cares for him and what a great role model/step father he could be for Ralph. A man being interested in your child and their well being is instantly attractive! Also, the chemistry between Walter and Paige on screen is undeniable (it also helps that Elyes Gabel and Katharine McPhee are dating in real life), so there is a part of us that wants the instant gratification of seeing them together after only one season of build up.

Why they shouldn’t: We have only had one season of “Scorpion” and while this season had 22 episodes (which is fairly long for a first season), season 2 is going to have 24 episodes! If the masterminds behind the show bring these two characters together so early on in the series then has there really been enough build up for the audience to have that moment of happiness when they finally do become a romantic item? We don’t think it’s long enough. There is also the obstacle of Walter and his difficulty grasping the concept of empathy, his social skills and his complete lack of consideration for anyone else. This is something he’s learning to change with Paige by his side, but we feel that it has to take more then one season for it to happen and while Paige may be patient enough to help him develop these skills as a friend, it would be way more challenging as a romantic partner.

We saw during season 1 that Paige and Walter have growing feelings for one another, with Paige admitting to them while Walter was under sedation at the hospital, but what we’d like to see in season 2 is Walter trying a little harder to make his feelings known, and Paige struggling to keep her distance so she can remain as helpful to Walter and the team as possible without the complication of romance. By the end of season 2 we would really like to see Paige and Walter’s feelings out there for both of them to face, so that going into season 3 we can see what they plan to do about these feelings or if the time is right for them to do anything at all.

What do you want to see happen with Paige and Walter during “Scorpion” season 2? Do you think it’s time to bring these two together as a couple, or do you want more build up before it happens? Leave us a comment in the box below and tell us what you want for them this season.
