‘Game of Thrones’ series finale will not be completely hopeless

LogoIf there is one thing that we’ve learned about “Game of Thrones” and George R.R. Martin’s famed A Song of Ice and Fire series, it is that for the most part, they are unrelenting in their approach to violence and death. It’s fairly to think that it is possible that the author could choose to end things with a bloodbath where most, if not all, of your beloved characters will be gone.

With that being said, this assumption may be completely false. As Martin himself said in a new interview with the Observer, his current objective is not to end the HBO series in a way akin to a Shakespearean tragedy. There may be sad moments, but there could also be happy ones:

“I’ve said before that the tone of the ending that I’m going for is bittersweet … I mean, it’s no secret that [J. R.R.]Tolkien has been a huge influence on me, and I love the way he ended Lord of the Rings. It ends with victory, but it’s a bittersweet victory.”

Obviously, there is no guarantee that “Game of Thrones” the show is going to end in a way that is anywhere close to the books, but we do feel like while certain characters may be different and events changed, the tone of the conclusion will probably be the same. We cannot imagine, for example, that the White Walkers conquer Westeros in the show and not in the books.

It may be some time before either the book or the TV series come to a close. HBO has said that they want to have at least eight seasons of the show, and there are two more books in Martin’s series to come out. The Winds of Winter could be out before the start of season 6.
