Kendrick Lamar to be first musical guest on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’

Late ShowWe are less than a month away from the start of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and that means that the host is starting to open up a little bit about what his show could be. Not only that, but the same goes for who could be appearing on it.

Today at the TCA Summer Press Tour, Colbert revealed that joining George Clooney on his first show September 8 will be Kendrick Lamar as the musical guest. This is a fun gig, given that Lamar was the last musical guest who appeared on “The Colbert Report.” It’s a smart move for him to make business-wise in addition to one that he may be personally happy with; CBS is known for skewing old, and by getting an artist very popular with young people on his show, he may succeed right away in attracted some ad-friendly viewers to the show.

One other part of the discussion that we find interesting is that really, CBS has not asked Colbert to really alter anything about who he is, though we know he is abandoning the character that he played for so many years over on Comedy Central:

“CBS has asked nothing of me other than I fill an hour every night; the format hasn’t changed … They haven’t asked me to change or do anything.”

Given that Colbert has brought over his staff from “The Colbert Report” over to this show, he did say that there will be a lot of political humor on “The Late Show.” Also, there will be a completely new set that emphasizes more of the “theater” aspect of the Ed Sullivan Theater that will play host to the show.

We’ll hopefully have some more news on Colbert’s “Late Show” at some point soon. Stay tuned, and head over here to get some other news on all we cover via our CarterMatt Newsletter. (Photo: CBS.)
