‘Ray Donovan’ season 3 spoilers: Series boss on Ray’s new circumstances

Ray Donovan -When Sunday night’s season 3 premiere of “Ray Donovan” premieres on Showtime, it is pretty fair to say that you are not going to be seeing the title character in a position even remotely close to the one that he was in for the majority of last year. He has pushed himself away from Ezra, and after her affair, he has also done the same thing with his wife. He’s experiencing both physical and emotional loneliness, and this is something that is going to play into how he operates early on this season. Is it possible that things will change for him? Certainly (they often do), but this serves as the starting point.

David Hollander is now serving as the series’ new showrunner, and speaking in a chat with TV Guide, he explains some of what Ray is going through right now, and how the rules that he has set up for himself are for the most part guiding some of his actions:

“It was important to us to take a measure of the impact of everything that Ray’s been through since the show began … It was time to watch him have a response to all of these events in his personal life, his professional life, and how he’s evolving as a man and a father. Ray is an iconoclastic, Southie throwback male who lives by rules that are somewhat hypocritical. He has a moral center in a very immoral world that is Ray’s and Ray’s alone. And there are consequences to his inability to forgive and his inability to let people off he hook for what he perceives are transgressions against himself or against the moral code that he carries. It was a really interesting to put him in a more isolated place where those rules he’s created and lived by so successfully are now forcing him to live in a different world.”

When it comes to Ray’s relationship with Mickey, one of the interesting things about this season is that for at least the early going, you are not going to be seeing much of them in the same room together. However, Hollander says that this will not be that way forever, and by the time we finally come to a meeting of the minds for these two, it will be different than anything we have seen so far.
