‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 finale reaction: Meryn Trant actor on key Arya scene

Game of Thrones -Game of Thrones” has never been a show to shy away from violent scenes, so you really cannot be surprised at all with what they decided to give us with the season 5 finale on Sunday night. We knew come last week that the odds of Meryn Trant dying were pretty high, but the way this man went out was incredibly gruesome. He was stabbed repeatedly by Arya Stark in an act of revenge, one that led to her getting some consequences of her own courtesy of the House of Black and White.

We know what it was like watching this horrific scene play out, but what about for the man acting in it? Speaking per Vulture, Ian Beattie had the following to pass along on the subject of the myriad of challenges that came with being a part of this insane sequence:

“Those three days were probably also the biggest challenge of my acting career. I think and I hope we got it right, that it presents the viewer with the horror of Ser Meryn and the thoroughly just end that he deserves. But it was also the worst moment of my professional career, and that was when the incomparable director David Nutter said, ‘That’s a series wrap on Ian Beattie.’ That was awful. That was terrible. It was like being told you can’t come back to your family again. Your large, slightly dysfunctional, incredibly talented family. The only good news was, because my eyes were stabbed out, for the last six hours of filming of the scene between Maisie [Williams] and myself, I was completely blind. I was wearing prosthetics over my eyes. So that presented a challenge in itself. I couldn’t see a thing. But that was good news, because none of them could see me crying.”

In other words, Ian Beattie is really just a big softie underneath all of the insanity and the awfulness of his character. It’s always tough to leave a show, and we imagine that it’s harder when your show is this one.
