‘Supergirl’: DC Comics exec on early expectations for CBS series

“Supergirl” is getting set to fly onto your TV screens this fall, and with that comes a very wide array of expectations. There have not been many female-fronted superhero shows, and almost everyone has an opinion for how this story should be and how Melissa Benoist should act as a character. In addition to that, there were a wide array of reactions to the trailer. Some even compared the occupational part of it to a recent “Saturday Night Live” – Black Widow parody featuring Scarlett Johansson.

Of course, there is one thing that should be noted about criticism: Sometimes, it can be temporary. As DC Comics COO Geoff Johns recently told IGN, the internet reaction to certain parts of “The Flash” at first was not great, either:

“When they first saw his suit, when we cast [Flash actor] Grant [Gustin], people were like, ‘That’s not the Flash!’ and now people are like, ‘Oh my god, he is the Flash!’ I’m so proud of that show and — in so many ways the Flash was my favorite character growing up — to see it realized and to see people embracing it. And it truly is a Flash TV show, we’re not shying away from anything. We jokingly said, yeah we’re doing Gorilla Grodd and I think people were like, ‘Okay…’ Yeah, no, we’re doing Gorilla Grodd! And we’ve got a lot of great plans for Supergirl in the same vein as that.”

Johns does have a tremendous point here; heck, we even remember in the early days of “Arrow” there was criticism regarding Stephen Amell’s casting, with many people feeling bummed out because they wanted to see Justin Hartley in the role. Both this show and “The Flash” have become two of the biggest comic-book achievements of the year.
