‘Bones’ season 10: Series boss on difficult Booth / Brennan story

Had season 10 of “Bones” been the last one, we would definitely understand why some people out there were feeling a little bit upset. After all, who wants to end the story on a bummer plotline regarding the two spending so much time apart over a gambling addiction? It’s been a hard thing to deal with as a viewer, especially since it goes very much against the common TV notion that couples will get together, get married, and then have a very happy life for the rest of their days.

Stephen Nathan had to know when creating the arc that there were going to be fans upset, whether it be with Booth over his decisions to fall back into this or maybe even Brennan to a certain extent for not forgiving him right away (though we actually understand very much that she wants to ensure that nothing like this happens again). So what did he have to say as a reaction to the reaction? He chatted recently with TVLine, and the following is his quote on the subject:

“I’d say I would be very disappointed if people were not upset. These are two characters that you’ve come to love. You have expectations of people that are in your life. You don’t expect them to do this, and so you get upset. But you know what? People usually surprise us, and they do things often that we think they’re better than… And that goes for Brennan, too. Her reaction was very severe. But that’s what happens.”

We feel like the story works because this is a dose of realism in a crime TV genre that tends at times to be exaggerated for entertainment (most murders in real life are not nearly as insane as on this show); also, we still feel fairly confident that the two will work things out in the end.
