‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 ratings drop further without Patrick Dempsey

The future -How is “Grey’s Anatomy” doing at the moment in the post-Patrick Dempsey era? This is something that we were starting to wonder about almost the moment that the show aired “How to Save a Life.” We felt for Shonda Rhimes and company when he departed, but they really did not have any other choice. This is not

Overall, the episode that aired last night (entitled “Time Stops”) ended up drawing a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down for the second straight week. We’re not going to lay this all entirely at the feet of Dempsey, since these are the sort of ratings that the show was getting before its exit. Maybe this is just the show falling back to its equilibrium, but we probably will not know for sure until we get into season 12.

Why is that? It ties back into the fact that next week is the finale, and the ratings for these episodes do traditionally rise by a great deal over the ones that air in weeks prior. We’re feeling pretty strongly that the series will find a way to deliver and then some when it comes to that.

Of course, the show may not even need to worry that much about the ratings for next season, depending of course on what Rhimes, the cast, and ABC decide to do. It is certainly feasible that they determine that they want season 12 to be the last, and then they just build towards a proper goodbye. That would certainly be both fine and understanding, given the amount of time that has been invested.
