‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 5 review: Did Dr. Turner save the day?
Sunday night’s new episode of “Call the Midwife” was one that could be once again described with a simple word: Emotional. Brittle bone disease was one of the central focuses on the hour, in addition to watching and seeing how some of the cast members on the show all reacted to this in their own way.
Dr. Turner did the best that he could to identify the problem, but the issue here is that this was not something particularly easy to point out. It was difficult, and striking an accusatory tone with the child’s parents beforehand about it did not make matters much easier.
Also, we had a presence of culture within this episode, as we saw a new pregnant woman arrive from halfway around the world! This story, at least until the emergency near the end, was one of the most refreshing ones of the season so far. It gave us more insight into how others lived during that time, and the medical practices in which they observed.
In the end, this was another difficult episode. Maybe there were a few assorted moments that gave you hope, but we had to watch a series of operations in order to get there. (This includes that sweet Shelagh scene near the end.) What was somewhat of a bizarre coincidence was the emphasis on medications and vaccines in this episode, given that this is something that has dominated many of the headlines as of late.
The major negative is that wish we were getting more of the central characters, and we want there to be a stronger lead for most of the action. Grade: B.

This was a very good episode but, I have to admit, I’m getting alarmed that we won’t be seeing Chummy again! Where IS she? I know, I know……she’s running the home for unwed mothers. But is Miranda Hart finished with CTM or will she be returning in this season?
