‘Red Band Society’ finale: Did Fox’s drama end on a heartwarming note?

Tonight, “Red Band Society” officially came to its conclusion on Fox, and we are imagining already that this one is going to be feeling rather bittersweet for almost everyone who watched it for quite a long time.

Let’s start here with the positives, though, since there was quite a bit of good stuff that the show brought to these last two hours: Touching moments, characters starting to open up their hearts, and yet another reminder that Octavia Spencer was amazing in her role. Was there the reality of death thrown in here? Definitely, but you had to expect that a show like this would end on an almost-bittersweet note. We feel like there are obvious and smart parallels that can and should be drawn here between this show and “Parenthood,” given how the two brought so many similar things to the table when the dust settled.

In the end, though, what the show brought to us was hope and optimism that people can change, the coldest of hearts can become warm, and there is a reason to stay determined in the hardest of moments.

Were these two hours perfect? Hardly, given that in between the cancer and the romantic updates in the second episode, everything felt just a little bit rushed. The writers didn’t really have a choice, though, given that the cancellation came down at a point when they had other scripts planned.

In the end, this was a nice end to a show that started slow, but improved gradually as time progressed. We just hope that it did enough to make you feel like the book is firmly closed. Grade: B+.
