NBC’s ‘The Voice’ video: Winner Craig Wayne Boyd performs on ‘Today’

Earlier this week, Craig Wayne Boyd ended up becoming a surprise victor of sorts on “The Voice,” and he did so using a variety of different techniques. He appealed to the Southern community, he appealed to the religious community, and he also catered to Blake Shelton’s massive fan following.

In a way, his win was still worthy of being considered an upset. He managed to overtake Matt McAndrew and Chris Jamison despite a slightly weaker overall presence on iTunes, and that goes to show you something about his following. They vote via phone, text, and every other measure.

Craig’s future here could be an interesting one. He is going to get a chance obviously to record a solo album at some point, though it is still to be seen what the label will be, and when it will come out. There is also an interesting trade-off here, as you have to wonder whether or not he will get a release out early to capitalize on the fame, or take his time to really craft something, even if it could end up sacrificing something when it comes to sales and attention.

The tough thing that comes with winning this season of “The Voice” is that come two and a half months, a new season is already premiering. At least the winners of the summer season get a few extra months to have the spotlight. (With that being said, the lack of attention for Josh Kaufman this season was troubling.)
