‘MasterChef’ season 2, episode 2 review: Hardly a piece of cake (because it’s pie)

“MasterChef Junior” can occasionally be a strange beast. For example, we basically spent a good 15 minutes this episode on a pancake-flipping challenge that was mostly just an excuse to pour syrup all over the judges.

Still, we cannot complain that much about it. It’s fun! This entire episode really emphasized that, and reminded us that this is a competition of kids. You don’t want to see them stressed out and crying most of the time. Sean technically “won” the challenge, which meant he had immunity moving forward.

With that being said, eventually there was a competition in here to figure out who was going to stay and go, and it was all about pie. Specifically, citrus cream pies. Once again, many of the cooks reminded us that we’re terrible at pie-making. Levi and Adiah outstanding in here, while Samuel’s mad-scientist strategy came back to bite him this time, but the lucky news for him was that there were some out there who struggled more than him.

The cooks eliminated tonight were Jessica and Natalie, who both did a fairly decent job with the challenge. The reality here is that pie-making is hard, and you have to really work for years to perfect this. For Natalie, she was probably even more hampered by the fact that she seemed to have no sweet tooth whatsoever.

In the end, there is still so much to love about this show. It’s not the most dramatic reality show out there, but it is a slice of breezy fun that works to make you feel good, and probably hungry at the same time. Grade: B+.
