‘NCIS’ season 12, episode 5 review: McGee becomes McGibbs and more

The latest -Tuesday night’s “NCIS” episode was entitled “The San Dominick,” if you like this show when it is a little more action-packed, then odds are you were smile during this one from ear to ear. It was a fast-paced episode that featured piracy, a great guest-starring turn from Jim Beaver, and a whole lot more.

Basically, it was one of the better episodes of the season, though ironically, our favorite part was not with Tony and Gibbs, trying to figure out what was happening on board what seemed on the surface to be an ordinary cargo ship.

Instead, the best part of the episode for us was witnessing some of the fun stuff that came back at Headquarters, where McGee was put in charge … and became drunk with power? We feel like McGibbs is one of those sorts of nicknames that is probably going to haunt the guy for a long time, especially due to his little seat-stealing moment at the very end. We wish that there was even more fun stuff like this for the McGee character to do here on a weekly basis. He is the best comedic character within this world, and there are times when he doesn’t have enough to do.

While this episode did not reinvent the wheel and listening to Bishop talking about failing a test was not particularly interesting, at least “The San Dominick” did a little bit to shake up the standard “NCIS” formula. Plus, it’s nice to see some actual characters on the show aboard a boat again. Grade: B.
