‘The Walking Dead’ season 5 premiere reaction: Chad L. Coleman on that Judith scene

TyreeseIs it possible that you can be too good at your job as an actor? This does seem to be the case to a certain extent when it comes to what happened to Tyreese and Rick during the premiere of “The Walking Dead” with Baby Judith.

The scene where Tyreese handed off this child to Rick was one of the most emotional parts of the hour, but it also happened to be one of the hardest ones to film. Why was that? As the excellent Chad L. Coleman said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the intensity that he and Andrew Lincoln had needed to be balanced in a way that wouldn’t disrupt the child:

“He’s so intense that of course it scared the crap out of the baby. [Laughs] So we were trying to find a way to get all of that in but to make Judith, you know, comfortable. So it took a little while. So he took her for a walk and held her and held her, because he had to rush in. So it’s not like he could just hold her, calm her, “Shoot,” you know. So, cause we wanted that whole deal with him rushing in, that intensity shook Judith for a little while until we finally got her kind of dialed back a little bit. But it was an amazing, amazing moment. And for me, you know, I’m daddy day care, but come on. That’s the most noble thing you could do, you know — deliver this guy’s kid back to him, and, you know, there’s hope for the future. All that good stuff.”

Given that Tyreese and Carol are probably our two favorite characters on the show right now, we’re really hoping that they manage to make it through all this without too much more death and devastation coming their way … but this is “The Walking Dead.” We have to expect something shocking to happen coming up.
