‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 5: Shay Mitchell on joys of playing Emily

So far, “Pretty Little Liars” has been a unique journey for every character who has appeared on the show, and that includes Emily Fields. She’s seen those she love die, seen those who torment her suffer, and all while she is trying to somehow grow up under the worst possible circumstances.

With her, one of the best things about the character is that she’s allowed to just be. By that, we mean the fact that she is a lesbian is a part of the story, and not the story. It isn’t exploited for ratings, stereotyped, or brought up just for the reason of doing so.

This is all clearly something that Shay Mitchell herself has taken notice of, as the actress had the following to say in a new interview with Flaunt about why she enjoys playing the character so much:

“It’s just been amazing. Every single day I get a tweet from fans saying how much they can really relate to Emily. That she’s the first character they feel isn’t a stereotype.”

So what comes ahead for Emily now? We still are hopeful that things between her and Paige will straighten out, but that is not confirmed. For now, many of the Liars may still be trying to digest what exactly happened to Mona, and the shock and surprise that came along with that.

The return of “Pretty Little Liars” will happen in December with the Christmas Special, and then the second half of the season in its entirety will take place starting in January.
