Who knew that Michael Socha’s Will Scarlet was going to be as big of a mystery on “Once Upon a Time” season 4 as Anna, Elsa, or any of the “Frozen” characters? We hear earlier this year that he would be promoted to series regular, but there is much to be revealed still about this Knave of Hearts. The show has the challenge of creating a new introduction to this character for those who did not see the “Wonderland” spin-off, and they also have to find him plenty of things to do.
The good news that we can offer up right now is that we at least have some further clarification as to what Socha’s role will be, and it doesn’t seem like they are going to unnaturally shove him into the story right away. Just take a look at what executive producer Edward Kitsis said on the matter to The Hollywood Reporter:
“We’re going to get a little taste of Michael in the first 11 [episodes] — glimpses of him. But Michael’s character, as we remember, was a disgraced member of the Merry Men, and Robin Hood is very much alive living in Storybrooke. So we’re going to see them reunite. Obviously for people who watched [Once Upon a Time in] Wonderland, they are like, ‘Wait, he had his happy ending. He went off with the Red Queen.’ We are going to tell that story, what happened and what brought him back to Storybrooke. And that will probably be in the later half in the season, and it will be done in a way that if you’ve never seen Wonderland, we’re going to fill in the blanks. We’re also going to find out that he has an interesting connection to another character from the past, from season one of Storybrooke.”
What we wonder for the time being is how his relationship with Robin Hood could be impacted by everything that was originally in the past, and what may now be impacted by Emma’s rescue of Maid Marian. We know already that this changes things for Regina, but could it for him, as well? Time will tell.
