ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 7 spoilers: Stana Katic, Nathan Fillion, and an alternate universe

We have to admit that we’re a big fan of the alternate universe episodes of long-running shows. As someone who looks at entertainment through a postmodern lens most of the time, we always appreciate it when networks do risky things and fool around with form a little bit.

Well, we are going to see that in particular during the upcoming “Castle” episode entitled “Time of Our Lives.” Originally, we thought that this episode (the sixth of the season) could be the one where Rick and Kate get married, judging from the title and the fact that prolific writer Terri Edda Miller is responsible for the hour. Maybe that wedding happens before or after this, but what we know is that this is going to be an hour that, at least in part, looks at what would have happened if Rick and Kate never met in the first place.

Speaking on this subject to TVLine, series star Jon Huertas (Esposito) had the following to say about what this story could be:

“The first couple [episodes] can’t bring too much comedy … But this ‘alternate universe’ is classic Castle, where you mix a great procedural crime with comedy.”

What we really like about this episode in theory is that it could almost work like a domino effect. Who knows? Maybe because of the fact that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic’s characters do not meet, he ends up going down some other crazy path. Or, maybe she is not able to be as effective at her job in the end. Maybe this ends up changing what Ryan and Esposito’s friendship would be like in the future.

While you will not get a chance to actually watch this episode until November, this sounds like it will be one worth waiting around for.
